Flame Arresters, Detonation Arresters, Breather Vents,
and Pressure / Vacuum Vents

Flame arresters stop the transmission of flames through piping after an ignition event associated with combustible gas inside the piping. They also stop the transmission of flames into a tank or piping from an ignition event outside of a tank or piping that is venting combustible gas into the atmosphere.

The arresters are designed to reduce the heat associated with the flame as the gas flows through it. The heat is reduced to a point where the flame is extinguished. Each arrester is configured specifically to meet application requirements. Gas classification, flow requirements, pressure-drop requirements and the number of pipe diameters between the arrester and the flame’s ignition source factor into the arrester’s proposed configuration.

BS&B markets its flame arresters under the FlameSaf brand name.

Tank Vents

Tank vents (AKA conservation vents, breather vents or pressure/vacuum relief valves) prevent tanks from exploding due to overpressure. They also prevent tanks from collapsing, or imploding, due to vacuum.

The vents relieve overpressure related to pumping fluids into the tank, atmospheric heating of the tank and heating of the tank due to fire that is external to the tank. They also relieve vacuum related to pumping fluids out of the tank and atmospheric cooling of the tank. The customer chooses the point at which the vents provide relief of either pressure or vacuum.

BS&B markets its tank vents under the TankSaf brand name.
